Grocery Chain Launches $120K Initiative to Fight Rising Food Costs & Insecurity

SACRAMENTO, CA – October 30, 2025 – The Save Mart Companies is rolling out a $120,000 initiative dubbed the ‘Right By You’ Affordability Promise, aimed at combating rising food costs and addressing food insecurity across California and Nevada. The program, a multi-faceted approach encompassing food bank support, discounted meals, and innovative accessibility options, comes at a critical time for many families facing economic hardship.

Addressing a Growing Crisis

Food insecurity rates are on the rise in both California and Nevada, fueled by inflation and the rollback of pandemic-era assistance programs. Millions of households are struggling to afford groceries, forcing difficult choices between food and other essential needs. According to recent data, nearly 22% of California households and 15% of Nevada households experienced food insecurity this year. The challenges are particularly acute for low-income families, children, and vulnerable populations.

“We’re seeing a concerning increase in the number of people who rely on food banks and assistance programs,” said a representative from a local food bank. “The need is greater than ever, and initiatives like this are vital to supporting our communities.”

The Save Mart Companies recognizes this growing crisis and is responding with a comprehensive program designed to provide immediate relief and long-term solutions. The ‘Right By You’ initiative focuses on affordability, accessibility, and community support.

A Multi-Pronged Approach to Affordability

The cornerstone of the ‘Right By You’ promise is a commitment to offering affordable meal options. Save Mart, Lucky, and FoodMaxx stores are offering holiday meals for under $6 per person (Save Mart/Lucky) and under $5 per person (FoodMaxx), providing a cost-effective way for families to celebrate the holidays. The company is also actively promoting competitive pricing on essential grocery items and expanding its private label offerings.

Beyond holiday meals, The Save Mart Companies is investing in innovative solutions to reduce food waste and increase accessibility. The company’s partnership with Flashfood, an app that offers discounted items nearing their best-by date, is rapidly expanding across all 194 stores. This partnership not only helps reduce food waste but also provides shoppers with an opportunity to save money on groceries. Flashfood is also gearing up to accept SNAP EBT payments at Save Mart stores, further expanding access for low-income shoppers.

“People are looking for ways to stretch their grocery budgets,” said a consumer shopping at a Save Mart location. “Any initiative that helps lower costs or reduce food waste is greatly appreciated.”

Investing in Community Support

Recognizing the crucial role of food banks in addressing food insecurity, The Save Mart Companies is launching a $120,000 ‘Friends Feeding Friends’ matching fund. For every $5 or $10 Pantry Pack purchased at checkout, the company and Keurig Dr Pepper will each match the donation, amplifying the impact of shopper generosity. The company’s CARES Foundation is also contributing $200,000 through its ‘Feeding Forward Grant’, providing critical infrastructure support to local food banks. This long-term commitment demonstrates a dedication to addressing the root causes of food insecurity and building stronger communities.

“This initiative goes beyond just providing food,” explained a spokesperson for The Save Mart Companies. “We’re investing in local food banks, reducing food waste, and making affordable options more accessible to all.”

The company is also offering a 10% military discount on Veterans Day and continued discounts on Mondays in November, as well as new ‘Buy Now, Pay Later’ options for online purchases, providing additional financial flexibility for customers.

The ‘Right By You’ Affordability Promise represents a significant investment in communities across California and Nevada, providing a lifeline for families struggling with rising food costs and food insecurity. The initiative’s comprehensive approach, combining affordability, accessibility, and community support, demonstrates a commitment to making a meaningful difference in the lives of those in need.
