Glendale Bridges Generations With Innovative Tuition-Free Preschool

GLENDALE, AZ – April 07, 2026 – A groundbreaking partnership in Glendale is set to bring preschoolers and senior citizens together under one roof, tackling the high cost of early education while fostering unique community bonds. Glencroft Center for Modern Aging and Bezos Academy today announced the upcoming opening of Bezos Academy Glendale – Sahuaro Glenn, a full-day, tuition-free preschool located directly on the Glencroft senior living campus.

Set to open in Fall 2026, the new Montessori-inspired school will provide fully funded education for up to 100 children aged three to five. This initiative represents a significant step toward creating an intergenerational community, where daily interactions between children and senior residents are not just possible, but encouraged. The partnership aims to enrich the lives of both the youngest and oldest members of the community, creating a vibrant hub of learning and connection.

A Bridge Between Generations

The core of this innovative project lies in its intergenerational model, a concept backed by extensive research highlighting profound benefits for both age groups. For the senior residents of Glencroft, the daily presence of children offers more than just cheerful noise; it provides opportunities for increased social engagement, cognitive stimulation, and a renewed sense of purpose. Studies on such programs consistently show that regular interaction with youth can reduce feelings of loneliness and isolation among older adults, while activities like storytelling and shared learning can boost cognitive function.

Beyond its social innovation, the partnership directly confronts one of the most pressing challenges for families in Arizona: the prohibitive cost of quality childcare. In 2026, the average annual cost for a four-year-old in preschool in Arizona can exceed $11,000, consuming a substantial portion of a family's income. For many in Glendale, where the median household income was approximately $73,530 in 2024, such costs are a significant financial burden.

Bezos Academy Glendale – Sahuaro Glenn will be entirely tuition-free for eligible families. The program offers fully funded scholarships to families earning up to 400% of the federal poverty level, which translates to an annual income of about $132,000 for a family of four. This model removes the financial barrier to high-quality early childhood education, a critical factor for long-term academic success and economic mobility. All meals, snacks, and educational supplies are also provided at no cost.

"Expanding access to affordable, accessible, quality preschool can unlock opportunities throughout a community," shared Liz Swanby, Chief Schools Officer at Bezos Academy. The organization operates a growing network of such schools across the country, each tailored to the needs of its host community. By partnering with established local organizations like Glencroft, they can embed their schools in a way that magnifies their impact.

A Blueprint for Community-Centered Living

This project is not Glencroft's first foray into ambitious community-building. It marks the center's second major intergenerational initiative in recent years, following a 2025 program that provided housing and job training to young adults aging out of the foster care system. This pattern establishes Glencroft, a nonprofit founded in 1970, as a forward-thinking leader in defining "modern aging"—not as a retreat from society, but as active, purposeful engagement with it. The partnership has garnered strong support from local leadership, who see it as a model for civic strength. This will be the second Bezos Academy in the city, following the Fall 2025 opening of Bezos Academy Glendale – Desert Garden Park in partnership with the Glendale Elementary School District. Enrollment and Community Invitation

Enrollment for the inaugural Fall 2026 class at Bezos Academy Glendale – Sahuaro Glenn is now open. Families are selected through a lottery-based admissions process. To be eligible, families must have a child aged 3 or 4 by the program start date and meet the income requirement of earning up to 400% of the federal poverty level.

To celebrate the launch, Glencroft and Bezos Academy are inviting the public and media to a ribbon-cutting ceremony and tour of the new preschool facilities.
