Geneva School of Diplomacy Embarks on Ambitious Accreditation Quest

GENEVA, SWITZERLAND – March 25, 2026 – The Geneva School of Diplomacy and International Relations (GSD) is taking a significant step to solidify its position on the global academic stage, announcing its pursuit of two prestigious, US-based accreditations. The institution is in the advanced stages of securing programmatic accreditation from the Accreditation Council for Business Schools and Programs (ACBSP) and has initiated the rigorous process for institutional accreditation with the New England Commission of Higher Education (NECHE).

This dual initiative represents a pivotal moment for the private Swiss university, founded in 2003. By seeking validation from two bodies recognized by the U.S. Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA), GSD is embarking on a comprehensive strategy to enhance its international credibility, strengthen academic quality, and provide greater value to its students and alumni. The move is part of a multi-stage roadmap that ultimately aims for national recognition within Switzerland's demanding federal framework.

A Strategic Play for Global Recognition

The pursuit of ACBSP and NECHE accreditation is a calculated move designed to differentiate GSD in the crowded field of international education. While the school already holds a Swiss EduQua certification—a respected national quality label for continuing education—these new accreditations operate on a different scale, offering specialized and institutional validation against globally recognized benchmarks.

ACBSP focuses specifically on programmatic excellence in business education. Its evaluation is a deep dive into teaching quality, student learning outcomes, and continuous improvement across all of GSD's offerings, from its Bachelor's degrees to its Doctorate qualifications. Achieving ACBSP accreditation would signal that GSD's curriculum is not only academically sound but also directly relevant to the demands of the global workforce, a crucial factor for students of diplomacy and international business.

NECHE accreditation is even more comprehensive. As one of the oldest and most respected regional accreditors in the United States, NECHE conducts a holistic evaluation of the entire institution. Securing this accreditation would place GSD in an elite group; currently, only three other institutions in Switzerland, including Franklin University Switzerland and Webster University Geneva, hold this distinction.

Arber Reci, Head of Quality Assurance at GSD, framed the initiative as both strategic and foundational. "Our motivation in pursuing these two accreditations is both institutional and strategic," he stated in the official announcement. "It is important for us to align with as many internationally recognised institutional accreditation standards as possible, as part of a coherent, Swiss-anchored and globally creditable certification roadmap. This will help enhance confidence amongst our students and further grow our reputation both at home and abroad."

Beyond institutional prestige, the primary beneficiaries of this accreditation push are GSD’s current and future students. In today's interconnected world, the recognition and transferability of a degree are paramount. The Swiss higher education landscape has been undergoing a significant transformation since the implementation of the Higher Education Act (HEdA), which made federal institutional accreditation mandatory for all universities to receive federal recognition and use protected designations.

This national framework, overseen by the Swiss Accreditation Council, is a rigorous process in its own right. GSD has declared its long-term ambition to secure this Swiss Federal institutional accreditation, a goal that would cement its status within its home country. However, the path is challenging, particularly for private institutions.

"Swiss Federal accreditation is a relatively new national framework, with only a small number of private institutions having achieved the recognition to date," Reci noted. "We have bold ambitions to secure this certification as soon as we possibly can, which will place us amongst the foremost private education institutions in Switzerland."

By first pursuing established international accreditations like NECHE and ACBSP, GSD is not only bolstering its global appeal but also preparing itself for the intense self-evaluation and external review required by the Swiss authorities. The processes for NECHE and the Swiss federal system share many parallels, including a comprehensive institutional self-study and peer evaluation, allowing the school to build a robust quality assurance system that meets multiple high-level standards.
