Alumnus Rene’ Griffin Gives Historic $8 Million Gift to East Texas A&M, Secures Naming Rights for New Event Center
COMMERCE, TX – February 05, 2026 – East Texas A&M University today announced an unprecedented $8 million gift from alumnus Rene’ Griffin, a transformational contribution that stands as the largest single philanthropic donation in the institution's history.
The historic gift, which also marks the largest donation to the university's Lion Athletics program, will be recognized by naming the new, state-of-the-art event center currently under construction the Rene’ Griffin Event Center. The naming, approved by The Texas A&M University System Board of Regents, also represents the largest naming rights gift in the 63-year history of the Southland Conference, setting a new benchmark for philanthropy in the region's collegiate athletics.
“For more than half a century, Rene’ has poured his heart into East Texas A&M and its people, and his latest gift represents the culmination of a lifetime of extraordinary generosity to our university,” said East Texas A&M President Mark Rudin. “Rene’ truly embodies the Lion spirit, and it is both fitting and deeply meaningful that the new event center will bear his name.”
A Lifetime of Lion Spirit
Rene’ Griffin’s connection to the university and the town of Commerce is deeply personal and spans over six decades. A 1975 graduate of the university, Griffin’s roots in the community were planted when he moved to Commerce as a child in 1960. His unwavering loyalty is the stuff of local legend; he has proudly attended every single Lion Football homecoming game for the past 65 years.
His long history of support extends far beyond the football stands. Griffin has been a key contributor to countless university initiatives and has lent his expertise by serving on numerous boards. He currently serves on the Alumni Association Board of Directors and as president of the Delta Tau Delta Education Foundation, demonstrating a continuous and active role in shaping the university’s future.
In a statement, Griffin expressed his desire for the gift to serve as an inspiration for others. “I hope this gift inspires others whose lives have been positively impacted by their time at East Texas to invest in the future of this great university,” said Griffin. “By giving back, we support similar opportunities for the next generation of students and continue building upon the extraordinary legacy of East Texas.”
Raising the Bar in the Southland Conference
The impact of Griffin’s $8 million donation reverberates far beyond the Commerce campus, sending a clear signal across the landscape of NCAA Division I athletics. The record-setting naming rights deal within the Southland Conference provides East Texas A&M with a significant competitive advantage. Modern, top-tier facilities are a critical component in recruiting elite student-athletes, and the Rene’ Griffin Event Center is poised to become a powerful draw for the Lion basketball programs.
“The impact of this transformative and historic gift cannot be overstated,” said Director of Athletics Jim Curry. “Rene’ has been a mainstay of this community and this university for over 65 years, and it’s only fitting that his name adorns the new event center at East Texas A&M. We are grateful for his decades of support and for believing in the unbounded vision of East Texas A&M and Lion Athletics.”
The gift's structure ensures a broad and lasting impact on the athletics department. A significant portion will establish a new athletics unrestricted fund, providing flexible resources to bolster competitive excellence initiatives and directly support student-athletes. In an era of rising expenses in collegiate sports, such funding is crucial for sustaining and elevating program quality.
A Catalyst for Campus and Community
Slated for completion in early 2027, the Rene’ Griffin Event Center is designed to be far more than an athletic arena. University officials envision the facility as the premier multi-use event space in all of Northeast Texas, serving as a vibrant hub for student life and a central point for community engagement.
Beyond hosting thrilling basketball games, the center will accommodate concerts, conferences, and a wide array of campus and community gatherings. This multi-purpose design positions the university as a key regional anchor, with the event center expected to act as a significant catalyst for economic growth, drawing visitors and generating revenue for local businesses throughout the region.
The strategic foresight of the donation is further evident in its allocation. Griffin’s commitment, which secures the naming rights for the next 20 years, will also create a dedicated endowment for the long-term operations and maintenance of the facility, ensuring its viability for decades to come. Furthermore, it will kickstart a new fund to directly support and enrich students’ academic and social experiences on campus, reinforcing the university's commitment to holistic student development.
“It is a joy to work with Rene’ and witness firsthand his love for the Lion family, especially our students and student-athletes. He gives to others with a spirit of joy, enthusiasm, and a genuine desire to make a difference,” said Devin Girod, Vice President for Philanthropy and Engagement. “This investment will make a lasting impact on East Texas A&M and Lion Athletics, and we are inspired by his generosity. We hope that our alumni and partners will be inspired to step forward and join our Lion donors in educating and preparing the next generation of leaders for our region and beyond.”
With this single, monumental act of philanthropy, Rene’ Griffin has not only cemented his own legacy but has provided the foundation for a new era of growth and opportunity for East Texas A&M University, its students, and the entire Northeast Texas community.
