CUSM Earns Full Accreditation, Cementing Role in Inland Empire Healthcare

COLTON, CA – February 13, 2026 – The California University of Science and Medicine (CUSM) School of Medicine today announced it has received full accreditation for its Doctor of Medicine (MD) program from the Liaison Committee of Medical Education (LCME). The decision marks a pivotal moment for the young institution, conferring the highest national standard for medical education in the United States and validating its mission-driven approach to tackling one of California's most acute healthcare crises.

This full accreditation affirms that CUSM's program meets rigorous standards for quality and innovation, ensuring its graduates are eligible for licensure examinations and can enter accredited residency programs nationwide. For a university founded just over a decade ago with the explicit goal of serving a region in need, the milestone represents a powerful validation of its educational model and strategic vision.

CUSM was established in 2015 to directly confront the severe physician shortages and profound health disparities plaguing California’s Inland Empire. The region, one of the fastest-growing in the state, has long struggled with inadequate healthcare access. Research consistently shows the Inland Empire has one of the lowest ratios of primary care physicians in California, with some reports indicating as few as 39 doctors per 100,000 residents—well below the benchmark of 70 per 100,000 needed for adequate care. San Bernardino County, where CUSM is located, has a ratio of nearly 1,700 people for every primary care physician, far exceeding the state and national averages.

These shortages contribute to significant health inequities. Residents of the Inland Empire experience higher rates of chronic conditions like obesity and report poorer overall health compared to the state average. CUSM was designed as a targeted solution, building a pipeline of physicians not only trained in the region but also committed to practicing there.

The university's success in this mission is already evident. CUSM boasts that more than 70% of its graduates remain to practice in California and the Inland Empire, a remarkable retention rate that directly strengthens the local healthcare workforce. Founded in 2015 through a unique public-private partnership, CUSM welcomed its first class of medical students in 2018 and celebrated its inaugural graduation in 2022. The university's founding was made possible by an initial $80 million commitment from the Prime Healthcare Foundation, an act of philanthropy driven by Dr. Prem Reddy, Founder and Chairman of the CUSM Board of Trustees.
