Calgary’s music scene is about to get a little hotter – and a lot more heart-filled. Little Brown Jug Brass (LBJB), a dynamic ensemble known for its infectious energy and unique sound, is releasing its new album, Holiday Spirits, on November 28th. But this isn't just another album launch; it's a continuation of a long-held commitment to community engagement and providing access to music education for Calgary’s youth.

LBJB distinguishes itself by expertly blending the vibrant spirit of New Orleans jazz with a distinctly Canadian sensibility. Their sound, described by fans as “joyful, gritty, and unapologetically brassy,” isn't about imitation; it’s about fusion. “We’re taking that southern groove and infusing it with a northern soul,” explains a band representative. This sonic alchemy is evident in their latest singles, ‘Christmas in New Orleans’ and ‘My North Star Home’ (featuring Métis artist Ashley Ghostkeeper), both released November 3rd as a preview of the full album.

More Than Just Music: A Commitment to Community

While the band’s musical prowess is undeniable, what truly sets LBJB apart is its dedication to giving back. Founded on the principle of using music as a force for good, the ensemble has consistently prioritized community engagement. This commitment isn't a recent development; it’s woven into the very fabric of the band’s identity.

“From the very beginning, we knew we wanted to do more than just play music,” shares a band member. “We saw the power of music to transform lives and wanted to make that accessible to everyone, especially young people.”

This vision translates into consistent support for local initiatives. LBJB has a long-standing relationship with organizations like Green Fools’ “Social Circus” program, which provides arts-based opportunities for at-risk youth. They’ve also partnered with the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra’s “PhilKids” program, raising funds to provide after-school music education for underserved children. Currently, the band is organizing a holiday celebration to benefit Cornerstone Music Café, an inclusive music studio offering scholarships to aspiring musicians.

“Cornerstone is doing incredible work creating a welcoming space for all musicians,” says a source close to the band. “Supporting their mission is something we’re incredibly passionate about.”

Navigating a Competitive Landscape

Calgary's music scene boasts a vibrant community of brass bands, each with its own unique style. Bands like Delirium Street Party Brass and Brass Animals offer high-energy performances, while the Foothills Brass Quintet specializes in classical repertoire. However, LBJB carves out its own niche through its distinctive blend of musical influences and its unwavering commitment to social responsibility.

“There’s a lot of talent in this city,” acknowledges a local music promoter. “But LBJB really stands out. They’re not just playing music; they're creating an experience and making a difference.”

Their approach to fusion sets them apart. Unlike bands that simply replicate New Orleans sounds, LBJB integrates those influences into a distinctly Canadian musical landscape. This creates a unique sonic identity that resonates with audiences of all ages. The band actively aims to appeal to a wide demographic, hoping to connect with listeners “from 5 year olds to 95 year olds.”

Holiday Spirits: A Season of Giving

The release of Holiday Spirits is more than just an album launch; it’s an extension of LBJB’s ongoing commitment to community support. The band plans to leverage the album release to raise awareness and funds for local music education programs.

“We want to make the holidays a little brighter for everyone,” explains a band representative. “Music is a gift, and we believe everyone should have the opportunity to experience its joy.”

The album features a mix of original compositions and festive arrangements, all infused with LBJB’s signature blend of New Orleans groove and Canadian spirit. With the release of Holiday Spirits, Little Brown Jug Brass is poised to continue its trajectory as one of Calgary’s most dynamic and socially responsible musical ensembles. The band’s success isn’t just measured in album sales or concert attendance; it’s measured in the positive impact they have on the community and the lives of the young musicians they support.
