Madden played both football and baseball for Cal Poly in 1957 and 1958, earning all-conference honors as an offensive lineman. It was also in San Luis Obispo where he met his wife, Virginia, a fellow student.

After a knee injury sustained in his first NFL training camp with the Philadelphia Eagles ended his playing career, Madden returned to his alma mater, completing a Bachelor of Science in 1959 and a Master of Arts in education in 1961. His commitment to the university never wavered. Throughout the 1980s, he was a pivotal fundraiser for the athletic department and was instrumental in the successful 1991 referendum that elevated Cal Poly athletics to NCAA Division I status in 1994. In recognition of his immense contributions, he was inducted as a charter member of the Cal Poly Athletics Hall of Fame in 1987.

It is situated behind the south end zone of Spanos Stadium, near the Mustang Memorial Plaza, which honors the 16 players and team personnel who tragically died in a 1960 plane crash. Adjacent to it are extensive recovery and wellness areas, featuring modern therapy resources and hydrotherapy pools to accelerate physical recuperation and prevent injuries. The center also includes dedicated sports medicine and nutrition stations, ensuring athletes have direct access to health and dietary support.

Beyond physical training, the building is designed to foster community and academic success. It houses a 130-seat team room that can be converted into an academic lecture hall during the offseason, reinforcing the student-first aspect of the student-athlete experience.
