C Spire Completes Major Fiber Expansion, Forging Digital Lifeline Across Mississippi

RIDGELAND, Miss. – April 08, 2026 – C Spire has announced the completion of a landmark broadband infrastructure project, delivering high-speed fiber internet access to more than 14,000 homes and preparing 18,530 undeveloped lots for future connectivity across Mississippi. The initiative, funded by the Mississippi Capital Projects Fund, was finished ahead of schedule and on budget, marking a significant victory in the state's ongoing battle to close its persistent digital divide.

The project provides crucial connectivity to communities from Amite and Lincoln counties in the south to DeSoto County in the north, including some of the most historically underserved areas in the state. By deploying a future-proof fiber network capable of delivering symmetrical speeds of 100 megabits per second (Mbps), the initiative provides the bandwidth necessary for modern remote work, online education, telehealth services, and economic development.

A Lifeline for the Underserved

For years, Mississippi has struggled with its position in national connectivity rankings. Recent data has consistently placed the state near the bottom for broadband access, with a 2026 report indicating it ranked 50th among all states for access to 100Mbps speeds. With nearly one in five households lacking an internet subscription, the impact of this digital gap on economic and educational opportunities has been profound. This project directly confronts that reality.

The deployment of high-speed fiber represents more than just faster downloads; it is a fundamental shift in infrastructure. Symmetrical speeds, which provide equally fast upload and download rates, are critical for modern internet usage. This allows a family to simultaneously participate in video conferences for work, attend online classes, and access cloud-based applications without the frustrating lag that plagues older internet technologies. The expansion touches a wide swath of the state, including Hinds, Lamar, and Madison counties, injecting vital digital resources into local economies.

The project was administered by the Office of Broadband Expansion and Accessibility of Mississippi (BEAM), the state agency tasked with coordinating broadband deployment. BEAM Director Sally Doty emphasized the project's immediate and long-term benefits.

A Model of Public-Private Efficiency

The project's success serves as a case study in effective public-private partnerships for infrastructure development. The funding originated from the U.S. Department of Treasury’s Capital Projects Fund, a $10 billion program created to help states execute critical projects in the wake of the pandemic. Mississippi received a total allocation of approximately $164 million from this fund, which BEAM was responsible for distributing to qualified internet providers through a competitive grant process.

C Spire’s ability to complete its allocated work ahead of schedule and on budget highlights the efficiency of this model. The company's performance demonstrates a responsible use of taxpayer dollars and an aggressive approach to meeting deployment timelines.

“The Capital Projects Fund was intentionally designed to deliver swift, high‑impact results, and C Spire’s execution reflects that vision,” Doty noted, underscoring the alignment between the federal program's goals and the company's performance on the ground.

This project is part of a larger, ongoing investment by the Ridgeland-based technology provider. In the past year alone, C Spire has invested an additional $60 million in new fiber installations, laying 1,000 miles of new fiber cable. This brings its total network footprint to 12,200 miles across Mississippi, with its fiber network now passing a total of 217,900 homes in the state.

Future-Proofing for the AI and 5G Era

While the immediate focus is on bridging the current digital divide, the new fiber infrastructure is strategically positioned to support Mississippi’s long-term economic competitiveness. The massive data capacity of fiber is essential for the next wave of technological innovation, including artificial intelligence, the Internet of Things (IoT), and the full realization of 5G wireless capabilities, which rely on a dense fiber backbone.

Suzy Hays, C Spire’s CEO, stressed that the investment is about preparing the state for what comes next. “Expanding fiber across our state is how we are going to compete in the next phase of connected living, as demand for high-speed, internet-enabled smart homes, seamless AI-enhanced experiences and 5G connectivity will continue to increase,” she said.

By laying this foundational infrastructure now, communities gain the ability to attract modern businesses, retain a skilled workforce, and participate fully in a global economy that is increasingly digital. The 18,530 undeveloped lots now equipped with fiber access make those areas significantly more attractive for residential and commercial development, promising sustained growth for years to come.

The Broader Battle Continues

While the completion of this Capital Projects Fund initiative is a major milestone, state officials acknowledge that the work to achieve universal broadband coverage is not over. As of late 2025, an estimated 92,000 locations in Mississippi remained unserved by high-speed internet. However, this number is down significantly from over 220,000 just a few years ago, a testament to the aggressive investment from state, federal, and private sources.

The next major infusion of capital will come from the federal Broadband Equity, Access, and Deployment (BEAD) program, from which Mississippi is slated to receive $1.2 billion. The BEAM office is currently in the planning phase to administer these funds, with project awards expected to begin in 2025. This program will target the remaining unserved and underserved pockets of the state, building upon the progress made by C Spire and other providers.

In the meantime, BEAM continues to manage a multi-pronged strategy that includes digital skills training grants and public Wi-Fi projects to address all facets of digital equity. The state's concerted effort, combined with the proven execution of partners like C Spire, is steadily transforming Mississippi's digital landscape one connection at a time.
