CLAIRE, or the Cross Layer Spectrum Aware Cognitive Control Plane, acts as the network’s brain. This allows it to learn the patterns of the RF environment and predict problems, dynamically adapting to maintain mission-critical quality of service. INSPiRE, the Intelligent Network Slicing and Policy-based Routing Engine, extends these capabilities. It uses a concept borrowed from terrestrial 5G called “network slicing.” This allows the system to create multiple virtual networks over a single physical infrastructure. For example, an astronaut’s life-support data could be given a dedicated, high-reliability “slice,” while a low-priority science sensor transmits data on a separate, best-effort slice. The “intelligent” part is INSPiRE’s ability to create, manage, and tear down these slices on the fly based on mission policies and real-time conditions.
