BJ’s Bets Big on Small Stores with New Florida Market
- Store Size: The new BJ’s Market in Delray Beach is 55,000 square feet, roughly half the size of a traditional BJ’s club.
- Membership Deal: A limited-time founding member offer of $15 for a one-year membership, discounted from the standard $60 fee.
- Community Impact: BJ’s has donated over 155 million meals through Feeding America over the past 15 years.
Experts would likely conclude that BJ’s strategic pivot to smaller-format stores is a calculated move to enhance convenience and accessibility, allowing the retailer to compete effectively in dense urban and suburban markets while maintaining its value-driven membership model.
BJ’s Bets Big on Small Stores with New Florida Market
DELRAY BEACH, FL – January 27, 2026 – BJ’s Wholesale Club is shrinking its footprint to grow its presence. The membership-based retail giant is set to open its newest location in Delray Beach on January 30, but it won’t be the sprawling warehouse shoppers are used to. Instead, the company is doubling down on a smaller, more agile concept called BJ’s Market, signaling a significant strategic pivot aimed at blending warehouse club value with neighborhood grocery convenience.
Located at 14595 South Military Trail, the new 55,000-square-foot store is roughly half the size of a traditional BJ’s club. This opening marks the second iteration of the market concept, following a successful pilot that launched in Warwick, Rhode Island, in 2022. The new format is designed to offer a curated selection of high-demand items, focusing on fresh foods, produce, and household essentials for a quicker, more targeted shopping trip.
“BJ’s Market offers unbeatable value on groceries combined with a smaller footprint that makes for a quick shopping experience,” said Bill Werner, Executive Vice President of Strategy and Development for BJ’s Wholesale Club, in a statement. “BJ’s Market is perfect for families making a weeknight grocery run or a fast weekend trip between games and activities.”
A Calculated Strategy for Growth
The move into smaller-format stores represents a calculated strategy for BJ's, which has been aggressively expanding its national footprint. The initial BJ's Market in Warwick, at 43,000 square feet, was explicitly positioned as an “innovation lab” for the company. It allowed the retailer to test new product assortments, displays, and services in a live environment, gathering crucial data on how to best serve customers who prioritize convenience.
The decision to open a second, slightly larger market in Delray Beach suggests the experiment was a success. This model allows the company to penetrate dense suburban and urban markets where real estate for a 100,000+ square-foot warehouse is scarce or prohibitively expensive. It’s a nimble approach that complements the company's broader plan to open dozens of new full-sized clubs across the country, including a notable expansion into Texas. By operating both large and small formats, BJ's can capture different shopping occasions: the major monthly stock-up at a traditional club and the frequent, convenient grocery top-off at a BJ's Market.
The Delray Beach location is strategically positioned between existing full-size clubs in Boynton Beach, Parkland, and Royal Palm Beach, effectively filling a gap in its South Florida coverage and making the brand more accessible to members in the area.
Competing in a Crowded Local Market
The new BJ’s Market enters a fiercely competitive Delray Beach grocery scene. It will vie for customers against established players like the Florida-dominant Publix, known for its high level of customer service, and value-focused chains such as Walmart Neighborhood Market and Aldi. Furthermore, it faces competition from specialty grocers like Whole Foods Market, which has its own Delray Beach location, and superstores like Target that have significantly expanded their grocery offerings.
BJ’s aims to carve out its niche by delivering on a unique promise: the bulk-pricing benefits of a warehouse club in a supermarket-sized package. Shoppers will find a mix of pack sizes, from individual salad kits and sliced-to-order deli meats to the multipack pantry staples and bulk paper goods the brand is known for. The shelves will be stocked with national brands alongside BJ's popular private-label lines, Wellsley Farms and Berkley & Jensen, which have become a key driver of customer loyalty.
To further enhance the convenience factor, the new market will be fully equipped with the company's suite of omnichannel services. This includes online ordering for curbside pickup, same-day delivery, and the innovative ExpressPay service, which allows members to scan items with their smartphone and skip the checkout line entirely—a feature designed to maximize the speed of a “quick trip.”
Value, Membership, and Community Ties
At the core of the BJ’s model is its membership structure, and the new market is no exception. Existing BJ’s members will have immediate access, while new customers who sign up at the Delray Beach location will gain full membership privileges across all BJ’s clubs and gas stations. To drive local adoption, the company is offering a limited-time founding member deal for $15 for a one-year membership, a steep discount from the standard $60 fee, signaling an aggressive push to acquire new customers.
Beyond its commercial ambitions, BJ’s is emphasizing its commitment to the local community. The company announced a formal partnership with Feeding South Florida, the region’s leading hunger-relief organization. As part of this collaboration, the Delray Beach market will regularly donate unsold produce, meat, and dairy products to help combat food insecurity. This initiative is part of a long-standing corporate policy; over the past 15 years, BJ's has worked with the national Feeding America network to provide more than 155 million meals.
“Through our ongoing partnership with BJ’s Wholesale Club, we’re able to continue providing access to nutritious food for families in our community,” said Paco Vélez, President and CEO of Feeding South Florida. “We’re grateful for the commitment and support of BJ’s as we lead hunger advocacy efforts in South Florida.” This partnership not only provides tangible aid but also deepens the new store's roots in the community it aims to serve.
