Birla Carbon Ignites Circular Economy with New Italian Facility

TRECATE, Italy – February 05, 2026 – In a significant move to advance the industrial circular economy, Birla Carbon today launched a new, dedicated production line at its facility in Trecate, Italy. The state-of-the-art line will finish and package Continua™ Sustainable Carbonaceous Material (SCM), a high-grade product derived from end-of-life tires, making it available at an industrial scale for global markets.

The launch marks a pivotal moment for both the company and the manufacturing sectors it serves, promising a consistent, large-volume supply of a sustainable alternative to traditional virgin carbon black. This development is poised to strengthen supply chain resilience for customers in the tire, rubber, and plastics industries while tackling the persistent environmental challenge of tire waste.

A Cross-Border Blueprint for Sustainability

The Italian facility does not operate in isolation. It represents the final, crucial step in an innovative, cross-border collaboration designed to turn waste into a valuable resource. The raw material for Continua™ SCM is sourced from Birla Carbon's strategic partner, Circtec, which recently inaugurated Europe's largest and most advanced chemical tire recycling plant in Delfzijl, Netherlands.

Opened in January 2026, the Circtec facility employs a proprietary pyrolysis technology to break down used tires in an oxygen-free environment. This process converts them into high-quality recovered carbon black, which is then shipped to Trecate for final processing. The Dutch plant, inaugurated by King Willem-Alexander of the Netherlands, currently has the capacity to recycle 50,000 tonnes of waste tires annually, with plans already underway to quadruple that capacity to 200,000 tonnes. At full scale, the Delfzijl plant alone could process nearly 6% of Europe's total annual tire waste.

Birla Carbon's investment is strategically timed to meet a rapidly growing market demand. The global market for tire pyrolysis products is projected to expand at a compound annual growth rate of over 12% in the coming decade, driven by a confluence of powerful forces. Annually, Europe generates approximately 3.6 million tons of end-of-life tires, creating an immense disposal and environmental challenge that regulators and corporations are eager to solve.

Stringent environmental policies, such as the EU Green Deal and Circular Economy Action Plan, are pushing industries to abandon the linear "take-make-dispose" model. Simultaneously, consumers and investors are demanding that companies demonstrate tangible progress on sustainability goals. This has created a significant commercial appetite for materials like Continua™ SCM, which allow manufacturers to increase the recycled content of their products without sacrificing performance.

The product range, including Continua 8000 SCM, is designed as a partial replacement for virgin carbon black in a wide array of applications. For the tire industry, it provides a truly circular material that can reduce hysteresis—a key factor in improving a vehicle's energy efficiency. In mechanical rubber goods and plastics, its consistent quality and certified low levels of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs) make it suitable for consumer-facing products. The material is also fully compliant with Europe's stringent REACH chemical regulations.

By establishing a large-scale, quality-controlled production line in Trecate, the company aims to overcome historical challenges associated with recycled materials, namely inconsistency and unreliable supply. This move is intended to provide customers with the supply security and product uniformity needed to confidently integrate sustainable materials into their production processes, potentially lowering homologation costs and accelerating their transition to more circular product lines.

The company has set an ambitious target to divert 300,000 tons of end-of-life tires from disposal and back into the value chain annually by 2030.
