Beyond the Toys: Credit Union’s Drive Fuels Community Investment & Holiday Hope

Glendale, CA – As the holiday season approaches, the spirit of giving is taking shape across Southern California. California Credit Union (CCU) is once again partnering with the Los Angeles Boys & Girls Club to launch its annual Holiday Toy Drive, but this year’s initiative represents more than just seasonal generosity. It’s a tangible expression of the credit union’s core mission as a certified Community Development Financial Institution (CDFI), weaving financial inclusion into the fabric of community support.
From November 3rd through December 6th, CCU branches in Los Angeles and Orange County will serve as drop-off locations for new, unwrapped toys destined for children and families served by the Boys & Girls Club. While the drive aims to bring joy during the holidays, it also highlights a growing need within vulnerable communities and the proactive steps being taken to address it.
“The holidays are a time of joy for every child,” said Steve O’Connell, President/CEO of California Credit Union. “Something as simple as one donated toy can make a world of difference. We invite our members and neighbors to join us in bringing smiles and a little holiday magic to children in our communities.”
Addressing a Growing Need
The annual toy drive arrives against a backdrop of economic challenges for many Southern California families. Recent data from the U.S. Census Bureau reveals a poverty rate of nearly 15% in Los Angeles County, with several neighborhoods in Northeast Los Angeles experiencing even higher rates. The increasing cost of living, particularly housing, is placing a significant strain on household budgets, making it difficult for families to afford basic necessities, let alone holiday gifts.
“We've seen a definite increase in the number of families needing assistance,” shared a representative from a local community organization, requesting anonymity. “The challenges of the past few years have really compounded the financial struggles for many, and the holidays are an especially difficult time.”
This heightened need underscores the critical role organizations like the Los Angeles Boys & Girls Club play in providing essential support to vulnerable children and families. The organization serves over 30,000 youth annually, offering programs focused on education, character development, and life skills.
More Than Just a Donation – A CDFI in Action
California Credit Union’s commitment extends far beyond a one-time holiday drive. As a certified CDFI, CCU is dedicated to investing in underserved communities and promoting financial inclusion. This mission is evident in its range of initiatives, including financial literacy workshops, affordable banking products, and targeted lending programs.
“The toy drive is a natural extension of our broader commitment to the communities we serve,” explained a spokesperson for CCU. “As a CDFI, we’re focused on creating opportunities and building financial stability for individuals and families. This drive allows us to directly support children and families during the holidays while also raising awareness about the importance of financial inclusion.”
CCU's commitment to inclusivity is further demonstrated by its Bank On certified checking account, specifically designed for individuals who may not qualify for traditional banking services. This account helps bridge the gap for those who have been historically excluded from the financial mainstream.
A Legacy of Giving & Community Investment
While specific numbers for previous toy drives are difficult to quantify, social media posts and anecdotal evidence suggest a consistent and impactful effort over the years. A review of CCU’s online presence shows that the drive consistently generates a significant number of toy donations each holiday season. The credit union also highlighted a collection of over 5,000 toys during their 2023 drive.
“This drive isn’t just about the toys themselves,” explained a long-time volunteer with the Boys & Girls Club, speaking anonymously. “It’s about showing these kids that people care, that the community is behind them. It’s a powerful message, especially during a time when many families are struggling.”
The impact extends beyond the immediate joy of receiving a gift. By partnering with the Los Angeles Boys & Girls Club, CCU is investing in the future of these children, providing them with access to resources and opportunities that can help them break the cycle of poverty.
“It’s about creating a ripple effect,” shared a representative from CCU. “When we invest in our communities, we’re investing in the future. And that’s something we’re incredibly proud of.”
As the Holiday Toy Drive gains momentum, it serves as a powerful reminder that giving back to the community is not just a seasonal act of kindness, but a year-round commitment to creating a more equitable and inclusive society. For California Credit Union, it’s a core value woven into the fabric of its mission as a CDFI and a trusted partner in the communities it serves.
