BOSTON, MA – April 21, 2026 – The streets surrounding the Hynes Convention Center and Sheraton Hotel were transformed into a vibrant tapestry of color and creativity from April 3rd to 5th, as Anime Boston 2026 welcomed a record-breaking number of fans. The largest anime convention in New England announced it hosted 27,055 unique attendees, marking the most significant turnout in its 24-year history. The fan-run event, a cornerstone of the region's pop culture calendar, once again proved its immense drawing power, celebrating Japanese animation, comics, and music with an unprecedented scale.

Over the three-day weekend, the convention saw a peak turnstile attendance of 56,531 entries, as enthusiasts from around the world flocked to Boston. The energy was palpable, with thousands of cosplayers embodying characters from beloved series, filling the halls and creating a spectacle of fan passion. This year's success solidifies the convention's status not just as a fan gathering, but as a major cultural event for the city.

"Anime Boston 2026 was a really special weekend for us, and the energy throughout the whole convention was incredible to see," said Omega Au, Chair of Anime Boston. While specific figures for the 2026 event have not yet been released, large-scale conventions at the Hynes Convention Center are known to generate millions of dollars in direct and induced spending. With over 27,000 attendees booking hotel rooms, frequenting local restaurants, and utilizing public transportation, Anime Boston provides a substantial boost to the city's hospitality and service industries during its annual run.

Beyond its economic footprint, the convention showcased the powerful spirit of its community. The event's annual charity partnership successfully raised $18,373 for a designated cause, while a concurrent blood drive collected more than 50 units of blood, directly contributing to the needs of local medical facilities. These initiatives underscore the convention's dual identity: a massive pop culture celebration that remains deeply invested in community welfare.

Star Power from Japan and the Digital Realm

A major factor in this year's record-breaking success was an all-star guest roster that featured legendary creators and modern digital icons. Headlining the event was the internationally acclaimed composer Yoko Kanno, whose iconic soundtracks for series like Cowboy Bebop and Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex have defined the sound of modern anime for a generation of fans.

Making her first-ever U.S. convention appearance, author Hyūganatsu, the creator of the wildly popular light novel series The Apothecary Diaries, drew massive crowds. The talents from the popular VTuber agency hosted panels, meet-and-greets, and participated in the fan-favorite SUPER KARAOKE PARTY!, bridging the gap between traditional anime fandom and its evolving online future.

Since its founding in 2003 by the New England Anime Society (NEAS), Anime Boston has evolved from a gathering of 4,110 attendees into a premier event on the national convention circuit. Its ability to consistently attract over 20,000 fans since 2012 demonstrates its staying power and its crucial role in the East Coast's thriving anime scene.

"Having been part of Anime Boston for many years, it's been amazing to watch it grow year after year in both scale and impact," said Andrew Davis, President of the New England Anime Society. This commitment to its fan-run origins is evident in the sheer breadth of its programming. With over 700 hours of content, attendees could explore a bustling Dealer's Hall, discover new talent in the expansive Artist Alley, participate in fan-led panels, or compete in gaming lounges. This diverse offering ensures that while the convention grows, it continues to be an event built by and for its community.

As the organizers clean up the last of the confetti and fans return home, sights are already set on the future. Anime Boston will return to the Hynes Convention Center from May 28 through May 30, 2027, for a special milestone: its 25th anniversary. The continued growth and passionate community support suggest that the celebration will be even bigger, further cementing its legacy as one of the most important celebrations of Japanese pop culture in the United States.
