Unlike traditional, vulnerable box shapes, America’s Time Capsule is a precision-milled cylindrical vessel forged from stainless steel. The goal is to capture a snapshot that reflects the country’s leadership, institutions, and the vibrant, complex communities that shape its identity.

An Official Record for the Ages

The significance of America’s Time Capsule lies not only in its technological ambition but also in its official status. Mandated by the same public law that established the U.S. Semiquincentennial Commission, this project carries the weight of a national directive. It elevates the capsule from a simple commemorative gesture to an official historical record.

This federal backing distinguishes it from countless other time capsules, including the famous Westinghouse capsules buried for the 1939 and 1964 New York World's Fairs, which were private endeavors. It also operates in concert with other official acts of preservation. A separate Semiquincentennial Congressional Time Capsule Act authorizes a capsule to be buried on the Capitol grounds, focusing specifically on the history and milestones of the legislative branch. Together, these projects represent a coordinated, multi-pronged effort by the U.S. government to document its 250th year for posterity.

This initiative is part of America250’s broader mission to engage the entire country in the anniversary.
