BERLIN, Germany – March 19, 2026 – A wave of artificial intelligence is moving from experimental labs into the daily operations of workplace safety and corporate sustainability, driven by a demand for less administrative burden and more reliable data. A new industry report indicates a significant pivot towards practical AI adoption, with a strong preference for systems that augment, rather than replace, human expertise.
The findings come from the Safety Management and Sustainability Trends Report, released by the EHS and sustainability software provider Quentic in collaboration with independent research firm Verdantix. Based on quantitative and expert interviews, the study reveals that AI is rapidly becoming a priority, with 84% of surveyed leaders listing expanded AI adoption as a top goal for the next two years and 82% expecting their budgets to grow accordingly.
“Customers want less admin and more certainty in what they report,” explained Florian Lichtwald, Operating Partner at Quentic, in the report’s announcement. “This year’s findings show that AI belongs in daily safety and ESG work where it saves time, strengthens investigations, and turns observations into action.”
From Hype to Daily Practice: The Rise of the Co-Pilot
The industry appears to be moving past the initial hype cycle and into a phase of pragmatic implementation. The report highlights a clear preference for a collaborative human-AI model. A significant majority of leaders—70% in ESG and 52% in EHS—favor “co-pilot” approaches that support staff with powerful analytics while preserving crucial human oversight and decision-making authority.
This model is aimed directly at the administrative logjams that often plague safety and sustainability departments. According to the study, 45% of companies are very likely to invest in AI-based reporting automation, signaling a strong demand for tools that can produce faster, audit-ready outputs. The goal is to free up skilled professionals from tedious paperwork to focus on high-value tasks like risk mitigation and strategic planning.
“Our priority is in providing practical yet effective solutions that organizations trust and can adopt quickly,” Lichtwald added. “That helps teams close investigations faster, cut rework, and act earlier on recurring risks so incidents are less likely to happen.”
This sentiment is echoed by Quentic's Product Director, Dr. Torsten Thurmann. “EHS and Sustainability leaders are raising AI budgets, but success depends on tools that fit real operations,” he noted. “That is why we back co-pilot models that assist people and keep decisions with them. It is a clear way to improve safety outcomes and deliver audit-ready reporting.”
Shifting from Reactive to Predictive Risk Management
A key driver of this technological shift is the potential for AI to transform risk management from a reactive to a proactive discipline. Instead of merely analyzing incidents after they occur, companies are increasingly using AI to anticipate and prevent them. The report shows this is already well underway, with 57% of EHS leaders and 65% of sustainability leaders either using or piloting predictive analytics to identify hazardous patterns earlier.
These tools leverage machine learning algorithms to sift through vast datasets—from incident histories and safety observations to equipment maintenance logs—to flag previously unseen correlations and emerging threats. This allows organizations to intervene before a potential risk escalates into an actual incident.
This capability is particularly vital in complex environments involving multiple contractors and dynamic work sites. “Continuous monitoring is essential because some contractors still take shortcuts or bypass permits, and organisations can no longer turn a blind eye to that,” said Hugh Maxwell, Managing Director of Maxwell Safety Limited, who was interviewed for the report. “Digitalisation and real-time data give you a much more dynamic approach, letting you see performance as it happens rather than relying on slow, manual steps.”
Maxwell emphasized that this is not about policing workers but about ensuring consistency and safety. “It is ensuring the job is done safely, consistently, and without exposing people to unnecessary risk,” he stated.
The Data Dilemma and the Need for Transparency
Despite the optimism and investment, the path to successful AI implementation is not without significant obstacles. The report underscores that persistent gaps in data maturity remain a primary concern. While companies are eager to deploy AI, many are still grappling with foundational issues. A concerning 39% of respondents admitted they are only “somewhat ready” on the data front, citing a need for better governance and system integration.
Safety culture (a top concern for 61%) and risk visibility (57%) also remain critical challenges that technology alone cannot solve. Experts caution that AI is not a silver bullet; its effectiveness is entirely dependent on the quality and integrity of the data it is fed. Inaccurate, incomplete, or biased data will inevitably lead to flawed insights and potentially misguided actions.
This reality is forcing a greater focus on data governance and the demand for transparent, explainable AI. “You do not want a black box approach,” warned Mary Foley, Expert Services Strategy Director at Enhesa, in her contribution to the report. “The way data is captured and used has to be transparent and robust, and able to stand up to scrutiny inside and outside the organization.”
This need for trustworthy systems is reflected in what companies prioritize when buying new technology. According to the report, the top criteria are functionality, ease-of-use, and, critically, interoperability and integration. This indicates a mature understanding that a new AI tool is useless if it cannot seamlessly connect with existing workflows and data sources to create a single, reliable source of truth.
Navigating a New Regulatory and Ethical Landscape
The rapid integration of AI into critical functions like worker safety and ESG reporting is also attracting regulatory scrutiny. Frameworks like the EU AI Act are beginning to establish rules for “high-risk” AI systems, demanding transparency, accountability, and robust risk management. In the United States, agencies like the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) are developing guidelines to ensure AI is used ethically and effectively to improve workplace safety.
This emerging regulatory landscape reinforces the industry's move toward explainable AI and human-in-the-loop systems. Companies are realizing that to build trust with employees, regulators, and investors, their AI-driven insights must be defensible and their processes transparent. The ultimate responsibility for safety and compliance remains with people, and the most successful AI strategies will be those that empower human experts with better information, not those that attempt to operate in an opaque, automated vacuum.
