AEG Taps Veteran John Langford to Lead Asia-Pacific Entertainment Push
LONDON, UK – February 24, 2026 – By Matthew Richardson
AEG International has announced the appointment of veteran executive John Langford as its new President for the Asia-Pacific (APAC) region, a strategic move that signals an aggressive escalation of the company’s investment in one of the world's fastest-growing entertainment markets. The appointment, effective April 1, 2026, places a leader with a history of driving “record-breaking performance” in Europe at the helm of an ambitious expansion strategy focused on venues and real estate across Asia.
Langford’s appointment is a clear statement of intent from the global live entertainment giant. He will be tasked with overseeing the performance of AEG’s current portfolio and spearheading a robust pipeline of development projects in a market projected to be worth over $75 billion by 2033. This high-stakes play underscores a broader industry trend: a pivot to the East, where a rising middle class and a digitally-native youth population are fueling a voracious appetite for live sports and music.
“Asia-Pacific is a dynamic and strategically important market for AEG, with significant long-term potential,” said Alex Hill, President & CEO of AEG International, in the official announcement. “John’s track record of delivering sustained performance, driving operational excellence and leading high-performing teams makes him the ideal leader to drive our ambitions in the region.”
The Asia-Pacific Gold Rush
AEG's intensified focus on Asia is backed by compelling market data. The region's live entertainment sector, which accounted for nearly 20% of the global market in 2024, is growing at an estimated compound annual rate of 6.26%. By 2030, Asia Pacific is forecast to represent nearly one-third of the entire global entertainment industry's turnover.
This explosive growth is driven by several factors. Rising disposable incomes have created an expanding consumer base eager for premium experiences. This is particularly evident in the trend of “experience-led travel,” where nearly half of APAC travelers now plan trips around major concerts or sporting events. Furthermore, the region’s high mobile penetration and the pervasive influence of social media have reshaped content discovery and consumption, creating direct and immediate engagement between artists, venues, and fans.
Music concerts remain the dominant and fastest-growing segment, with global superstars finding fervent audiences and local genres like K-Pop becoming worldwide phenomena. Simultaneously, sports tourism is booming, with China and India showing a significant appetite for live sporting events. AEG’s strategy appears tailor-made to capitalize on these converging trends by establishing a network of world-class, multi-purpose arenas in key urban centers.
Building an Entertainment Empire, Brick by Brick
Langford will inherit a portfolio that is both established and rapidly expanding, forming the backbone of AEG’s regional strategy. The company's presence is already anchored by landmark venues like the 18,000-capacity Mercedes-Benz Arena in Shanghai. A joint venture with Oriental Pearl Group and the NBA, this venue has hosted everything from The Rolling Stones and Taylor Swift to NBA Global Games since its 2010 opening, integrating a live house, cinema, and a 20,000-square-meter retail district.
More recently, AEG has accelerated its pace. The IG Arena in Nagoya, Japan, opened in 2025, is a 17,000-capacity architectural showpiece designed by Kengo Kuma that will host the 2026 Asian Games. In Bangkok, the 6,000-capacity UOB Live Arena opened in February 2024 within a luxury shopping mall, demonstrating a successful model of integrating entertainment into high-traffic retail environments.
AEG's pipeline signals even greater ambition. Groundbreaking is expected in 2027 for an 18,000-seat arena in Osaka, the centerpiece of a sprawling entertainment district set to open around 2029. A second, larger 16,000-seat arena is also planned for Bangkok in partnership with The Mall Group, and the company has its sights set on a 20,000-seat venue in Seoul, South Korea. This strategy moves beyond single venues, aiming to create integrated urban destinations that combine live events with hospitality, retail, and dining.
The Man for the Mission
To spearhead this monumental effort, AEG has chosen a leader with a formidable and diverse background in the live entertainment business. John Langford's 30-year career spans continents and disciplines. Before his most recent role as Executive Vice President for Venues, AEG International, he served as COO for AEG Europe, where he was instrumental in driving commercial growth and operational efficiency.
His hands-on venue management experience is extensive. He was Vice President and General Manager of London's The O2, widely considered the world's busiest entertainment venue. Prior to joining AEG, he was a key figure at the Scottish Event Campus (SECC) in Glasgow, transforming its SSE Hydro arena into a leading European venue. His career also includes eight years as COO for major South African concert promoter BIG Concerts and senior roles in commercial radio.
Speaking on his appointment, Langford expressed his enthusiasm for the new challenge. “I have long admired Asia for its energy, cultural diversity and dynamic live music landscape,” he stated. “There is tremendous opportunity ahead, and I look forward to helping to accelerate AEG’s expansion and further establish Asia-Pacific as a leading market for live music and world-class venues.” Langford, who holds an MBA and a recent degree from the University of Cambridge in Business and Climate Change, will relocate to Singapore in September 2026.
Navigating a Complex and Competitive Landscape
Despite the immense opportunity, Langford's path is not without significant obstacles. AEG will not be operating in a vacuum. The Asia-Pacific market is fiercely competitive, with global giants like ASM Global (recently acquired by Legends) and Live Nation also deeply entrenched and expanding their footprints. ASM Global manages a vast network of arenas and convention centers across Australia and Asia, including the under-construction Kai Tak Sports Park in Hong Kong. Live Nation, through its promotions arm and Ticketmaster subsidiary, has a powerful presence in nearly every key market.
Furthermore, the region is home to powerful local players, most notably South Korea's K-Pop agencies like SM Entertainment, which are now vertically integrating by developing their own large-scale venues. This complex competitive dynamic is layered over a fragmented regulatory environment, with varying laws on everything from content censorship and licensing to data privacy across different countries.
Successfully navigating these challenges will require more than just financial investment. It will demand deep local partnerships, a nuanced understanding of diverse cultural sensitivities, and the ability to adapt to geopolitical and economic shifts. John Langford's extensive experience in managing complex operations across multiple international markets will be put to the test as he works to solidify AEG’s position not just as a builder of venues, but as a dominant force in the future of Asian entertainment.
