Following a developer-focused launch in late 2025, Aqua is now live for all users across 13 major blockchain networks, introducing a capital-efficient and risk-controlled alternative to the traditional liquidity pool model that has long dominated DeFi.

The Problem of 'Broken' Liquidity

This includes a weekly average of $542 million sitting completely outside of active trading ranges, resulting in an estimated $150 million in foregone fees for providers annually.
This inefficiency stems from the structural requirement to lock assets and fragment capital. A provider must split their funds across numerous protocols, trading pairs, and specific price ranges. Capital committed to one position is unavailable for any other purpose, creating siloed, inactive liquidity. This model forces providers to relinquish custody of their assets to the protocol's smart contracts, introducing counterparty risk while their capital often sits idle. Kunz argues that this structure is a major limiting factor on DeFi's ability to scale and attract more traditional finance (TradFi) capital.
Aqua's Architecture: A New Signal of Strength
Instead of another liquidity pool, Aqua operates as a sophisticated registry. This architectural shift is the key to its efficiency. Liquidity providers connect their wallets and simply approve a token balance. They can then create multiple liquidity positions—or quotes—that can all access that same underlying balance. The provider's tokens remain in their personal wallet, entirely under their control.
When a swap order arrives that matches a provider's criteria, the Aqua protocol executes an atomic transaction: it pulls the required tokens from the provider's wallet and simultaneously pushes back the received tokens and trading fees. If a swap cannot be covered by the wallet's current balance, the protocol simply bypasses that provider's position. At no point are assets held by the protocol itself.
This shared liquidity model represents a paradigm shift in capital efficiency. For example, a provider with a $100,000 balance can support three separate positions that collectively quote $300,000 of liquidity. The underlying tokens are available to every position at all times, with no borrowing or leverage involved. This allows providers to deploy their capital far more effectively, participating in more markets and strategies simultaneously without increasing their total assets at risk. As Kunz noted, "DeFi doesn't just need more liquidity. It needs more useful liquidity, active wherever demand appears."
Mitigating Risk in a Volatile Market
In an industry where security breaches and protocol exploits are persistent concerns, Aqua’s design sends a strong signal of risk awareness. The platform has undergone eight independent security audits from a roster of top-tier firms, including OpenZeppelin, Hexens, Nethermind, and Theori. This extensive vetting underscores a commitment to building a resilient system.
The most significant risk mitigation feature is the protocol's fully self-custodial design. Since Aqua never holds user tokens, it eliminates the systemic risk associated with large pools of capital locked in a central smart contract. A provider's exposure is always capped by the tokens they actually hold, not by the theoretical size of their combined positions. Furthermore, revoking wallet permissions immediately halts any new swaps from being filled, giving users direct and immediate control over their exposure.
This architecture also provides built-in protection against certain predatory trading strategies. One such vulnerability in pooled systems is Just-In-Time (JIT) fee sniping, where bots inject and quickly withdraw massive amounts of liquidity to capture trading fees from large swaps. Because each position on Aqua has a single owner, there is no shared fee moment for bots to exploit.
However, 1inch is transparent that Aqua is not a risk-free environment. Providers still bear standard market risks, including price volatility that can lead to impermanent loss, and the ever-present smart-contract risk inherent in any DeFi application. The platform is explicitly built for experienced users who understand and can manage these risks.
Fueling Growth with Strategic Incentives
To catalyze adoption and bootstrap a deep and active market, the public launch is coupled with a substantial liquidity rewards program.
