New Genesys Works CEO to Expand Workforce Pathways for Underserved Youth
Houston, TX – November 6, 2025 – Genesys Works, a national non-profit dedicated to creating career pathways for high school students in underserved communities, has appointed Byron V. Garrett as its next Chief Executive Officer. Garrett’s appointment signals a new chapter for the organization, promising an expansion of its impact and a continued focus on bridging the opportunity gap in a rapidly evolving job market.
Garrett succeeds Jeffrey Artis, who retires after five years of leadership that saw significant program expansion and increased success rates for students. Artis guided Genesys Works through a period of growth, expanding into eight cities and achieving notable outcomes, including a 90% college enrollment rate among graduates – significantly higher than the national average.
“Jeffrey built a strong foundation, and I’m excited to build upon that momentum,” says Garrett, bringing a wealth of experience in non-profit leadership to the role. Prior to joining Genesys Works, Garrett served as the President and CEO of the National PTA, where he focused on expanding the organization’s reach and impact, particularly in advocating for family engagement in education. He also held leadership positions at United Way Worldwide and the National Job Corps Association.
A Proven Model in a Changing Landscape
Genesys Works distinguishes itself through a holistic approach to workforce development, combining intensive skills training, real-world internship experiences, and ongoing mentorship support. This model has proven effective in equipping students with the skills and confidence they need to succeed in college and careers. The organization currently serves over 11,000 students annually, with a strong emphasis on placing graduates in meaningful employment opportunities.
“The need for programs like Genesys Works is more critical than ever,” says a workforce development analyst familiar with the organization’s work. “The skills gap is widening, and employers are struggling to find qualified candidates. Programs that provide targeted training and connect students with real-world opportunities are essential for addressing this challenge.”
That challenge is increasingly complex, as automation and the shift toward a more knowledge-based economy demand adaptable skills and lifelong learning. The organization is adapting to those challenges. It has expanded into key areas such as data analytics and cybersecurity, providing students with training in high-demand fields.
Building on a Foundation of Impact
Garrett’s leadership is expected to focus on several key areas, including expanding the organization’s geographic reach, strengthening partnerships with employers, and enhancing the quality of its training programs.
“We are committed to ensuring that our programs are aligned with the needs of the local labor market,” says Garrett. “We want to provide students with the skills and knowledge they need to succeed in high-growth industries.”
The organization has been proactive in developing strong relationships with businesses. It facilitates internships and apprenticeships, giving students hands-on experience and networking opportunities. This focus on employer engagement is a key factor in the organization’s success.
“The partnerships with local businesses are invaluable,” says a school counselor working with Genesys Works students. “It gives students a real advantage when they enter the job market.”
Expanding Reach and Strengthening Support
Beyond expanding its program offerings, Genesys Works is also focused on strengthening its support systems for students. This includes providing comprehensive college and career counseling, financial literacy training, and access to mental health services. The goal is to address the holistic needs of students and ensure they have the resources they need to overcome barriers to success.
“We understand that students face many challenges, both inside and outside the classroom,” says Garrett. “We are committed to providing them with the support they need to thrive.”
The organization is also exploring innovative approaches to workforce development, such as online learning platforms and micro-credentialing programs. This will allow it to reach a wider audience and provide students with flexible learning options.
“We are constantly looking for ways to improve our programs and better serve our students,” says Garrett. “We believe that everyone deserves the opportunity to succeed, and we are committed to making that happen.”
A Legacy of Opportunity
As Genesys Works embarks on this new chapter, the organization is well-positioned to continue its legacy of creating opportunities for underserved youth. With a proven model, a dedicated team, and a visionary leader, the organization is poised to make a significant impact on the lives of students and the communities it serves. The impact is particularly felt in communities where economic opportunity is limited, providing a pathway to economic mobility and a brighter future for students and their families.
“We’re confident that Byron will take Genesys Works to the next level,” says a board member familiar with the organization’s strategic direction. “He has the experience, the vision, and the passion to make a real difference.”
The challenge, as always, will be sustaining funding and scaling impact to reach more students in need. However, with a growing recognition of the importance of workforce development and a commitment to innovation, Genesys Works is well-equipped to meet those challenges and continue its vital work.
